Canon PowerShot A590IS - Pros and Cons
I have owned a A590IS for quite a while. As a professional photographer, I came across many cameras, including this one. This article is meant to show this camera's pros and cons, to help you decide whether it will work for you. The auto modes work as they should, I will focus on the advanced modes. So, here is what I like about this toy:
- It's compact, light, much smaller than other models in the PowerShot A series. - Image stabilization works perfectly. I can take great shots indoors without a flasher - Great image quality, with lots of controls over the contrast, saturation and sharpness settings. - It's fast, even compared to my DSLR. Not many consumer cameras come with such a low shutter lag time, and pre-focusing with manual focus does miracles in terms of speed. - Manual modes. Aperture and shutter priority settings work great, sometimes I keep forgetting that it's not a DSLR. - Optical viewfinder. Pretty handy in cases of very bright sunshine where you can't see anything on the LCD or if battery saving is necessary. - Batteries seem to last longer than previous A series PowerShots, the technical specs advertise 500 shots on rechargeable NiMH batteries. Another good thing is that this model works on common AA batteries that can be found everywhere, so you no longer have to worry about finding specific proprietary models.
Like every camera I've seen, this Canon comes with its downsides. Here are a few that I came across, and I sure hope Canon will take care of them in the near future.
- Low resolution display. The LCD is alright for framing shots and displaying the menu, but I wouldn't mind a higher resolution. - Live histogram is only available when viewing a photo, but not when actually taking that shot. There is unofficial software that implements this feature, and other manufacturers have already implemented this in similar models. Let's only hope it won't be long until Canon does it too. - The video feature is awful. You cannot use optical zoom during recording, the compression method is inefficient, so the video files tend to be large.
My overall impression of the camera is good. You get what you pay for. It has a set of great features which make it usable for both the occasional shooter and the more advanced photographer.

Things You'll Really Like About the Canon Powershot A590 IS Digital Camera
I'm quite the photography hobbyists, and own several digital cameras and DSLRs. I've been in the market lately for a smaller compact digital camera when I don't feel like carrying my digital SLR camera around. Previously, I've had some good luck with other Canon Powershot cameras and the A590 IS asked look like a reasonable candidate. In this review, I'll try and take a look at some of the more advanced features as well some of the basic features of the camera. Most cameras in its class, have a wide range of manual features. But, the Canon A590 IS offers some pretty beefed-up manual features as well.
The A590 is a little bit smaller than some of the earlier model power shot cameras, and the colors a bit darker gray as well. The finish looks a little more professional, and should stand up fairly well to the occasional scratches and nicks.
Unlike some of its competitors, the image stabilization is not a gimmick here. I was able to get pretty clear and concise photos, even when taking pictures several stops under the preferred shutter speed. The good news about this, is that it's quite possible to get decent indoor pictures without resorting to the cameras flash even at 35-50mm f2.8 1/10.
I was quite pleased with the photograph image quality. An extra bonus, is the ability to manually adjust saturation contrasts and sharpness. Standard with many cameras and the canon, are the JPEG compression size settings.
One thing I've complained a lot about in the past, is slow shutter response in many compact cameras. It's not really an issue with the A590. Surprisingly, for someone used to the speed of an SLR that's quite a statement. If you practice a little bit, and get the hang of manually focusing your photos you'll experience an even faster shutter performance speed.
You're in for a real treat, if you're the type of photographer that enjoys fiddling around with the manual modes on your camera. The A590 shows off much improved features over previous Canon Powershots in the A series. Including, a light meter, that makes suggestions for the ideal exposure settings. The resulting exposure, can be tweaked to the adjustment of the aperture and shutter speed. The M mode, is also much improved, in large part by the light meter.
The A590 provides some nice control when it comes to your camera's flash. Not including the automatic flash, there are three separate levels of flash intensity plus a preflash option. If you happen to have some external flash gear from other cameras, you be able to use that gear with the A590.
The A590 doesn't make the same mistake as many other compact cameras, and sacrifice the optical viewfinder for a larger LCD. So even if you're in a situation, where using the LCD is not a good option the viewfinder will come in handy.
You won't spend a fortune on batteries with this camera. According to the manual, with a couple of good rechargeable AA's you should get up to 500 shots before during a recharge. All in all, a very good value for the money.

It's all black, looks classy, and sophisticated. BUT as a proud owner of a Canon PowerShot A590IS, I could confidently say that nothing could be farther from the truth. I can say that even a kid could make it work. Heck! I had my son; he's 10 years old by the way, take pictures of me while I'm at the beach in the Philippines and the pictures turned out to be great!

If your hands are too weak to even hold the camera up and press the button, then it might not work. BUT that's a different story. This addition to the PowerShot A-series is sure to top the charts this 2008 leaving other digital cameras from big names like Sony, Nikon, Kodak, and even Canon way behind.
What made the Canon PowerShot A590IS a breeze to use is the NEW Easy Mode.
As the name of this feature suggests, it makes taking pictures WAY easier by allowing Canon PowerShot A590IS to make optimal adjustments to the settings, changes in brightness, contrast, shutter speed, etc. on the fly.
And that results to great looking and amazingly detailed pictures even if it was shot by a 10-year old!
